Raymond Blackgoat, born on February 21, 1944, in Blackhat, New Mexico, entered eternal rest on July 19, 2025, in Shiprock, New Mexico, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories. He was a devoted husband to Janet Poyer Blackgoat and son to Alice and Mose Blackgoat, who have predeceased him, shaping his character and instilling values that would carry forward into his own family.
Raymond dedicated 33 years of his life to the APS Four Corners Powerplant, where his skills as a welder were unmatched. He was not just a hard worker; he was the very embodiment of dedication and perseverance. Known for his witty humor and kindness, Raymond was always willing to lend a helping hand, touching the lives of those around him with his warmth and generosity.
Educated at Chemawa Indian School, where he graduated in 1976, Raymond pursued his passion for welding by attending Trade School at Fort Lewis College. This foundation not only equipped him with skills that would serve his family and community but also instilled a sense of pride in his work.
Traveling was one of Raymond’s cherished pastimes, but as much as he loved adventures, his greatest joy was found in the everyday moments spent with his family. His love language revolved around sharing meals, ensuring that those he adored had full bellies, often treating them to a hearty steak. Coffee time was sacred; it was during these chats that he offered wisdom and humor in equal measure. Raymond took great care in watching over his babies and grandbabies, always checking on them, ensuring their well-being, and showering them with affection.
He is survived by his beloved daughters: Lisa, Raylene, Antoinette (Toni), and Heather, who carry his spirit in their hearts. Raymond was especially proud of his large family, leaving behind 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who will remember his stories, laughter, and the love he shared so freely.
The community that Raymond has touched will gather to celebrate his life at the Desert View Funeral Home in Shiprock, New Mexico, on July 25, 2025, starting at 9:00 AM. Following the funeral service, he will be laid to rest at the Gallup City Cemetery at 12:15 PM.
Raymond Blackgoat will be dearly missed, but his legacy of hard work, humor, and unconditional love will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
